Reply:Wow... maybe you should figure out what kind of vegetarian you are! As far as I know, vegetarian eat butter. You might want to put some meat substitutes in there (tofu is good cooked) for protein. I'm a vegetarian and I eat butter. It's vegans that don't eat butter. Another thing... if you are "cheating" you should rethink being vegetarian. Vegetarianism is not like a diet: you can't cheat. You're either care about animals and are in this for life or you're not. Think about it before you call yourself vegetarian.
Reply:People post on here all the time asking if what they do is wrong or if they've violated the "rules" of vegetarianism. There are no rules. There are as many different type of vegetarians as there are just about anything else in this world.

If you're going for the vegan lifestyle, then don't eat butter. If you are going for a lacto-vegetarian or lacto-ovo-vegetarian lifestyle, then eat butter if you like it.

Now, personally, I don't like to consume products that come from milk, just because of the suffering dairy cows endure and supporting that industry is just not something I want to do.

Edit to fluffy cat the vegan diet is actually the most healthiest diet however you should be etaing low fat, low carbs and lots of vegetables if you only lived on chips and chocolate its not good for you. However a bowl of lentil soup with crusty italian bread, a summer salad, a chinese soup with tofu and rice noodle and 8 leafy green vegetabes and fruit (not all at once ) is very healthy. Toast with vegan spread and vegemite, orange juice, fruit, salad sandwich, more fruit, carrot sticks, steamed brown rice with vegetables and an apple with 8 or more glasses of water and jasmin tea is good for you however if you over eat and eat potatoes and bread and rubbish and drink fizzy drinks you will get fat and have rotten teeth!!!! Reply:No, that is NOT CHEATING. A lacto-ovo vegetarian diet is way more healthy than a vegan diet.

You would be better off using brown rice as brown rice has more essential nutrients and needed fiber.

its probably the amount of rain we have had i have busy Lizzie baskets and sweet peas baskets and both have been affected by the amount of rain we have had this summer,

if its nothing to do with the rain,have you checked the stems and the roots sometimes they get damaged or eaten by wild rabbits and that can be a cause for them dying

No, I would plant all but the cucumbers together. You will have cucumbers climbing up your plants. They have very long vines and need room to spread out. They may smother your other plants.

Depends on how big the bed is. You will definitely have to watch the cucumbers and their vines, they do not have deep roots, but if you do not have them climbing they may strangle your other plants.

Word of caution: the strawberries will spread like you cannot imagine! By next year they can quadruple!

I've had 2 new vegetable sweet pea plants disappear from my garden. (They were not stolen and 6" tall.) Something must've eaten them because there is is no visible trace of the stem or plant itself. It is 100% gone. What could be eating pea plants so hungrily?

Mice and aphids are number one enemies of the young plants and seeds; so are slugs and snails! Wrong time of year for aphids... I bet it was some snails!
Reply:Bunnies are another possibility, or squirrels, chipmunks, etc. Nice new green things may be irresistible to something in your near area.
Reply:Rabbits or ground hogs. Ground hogs love peas and beans and will eat them to the ground. So will deer. Good luck, I have had to give up my vegetable garden completely because of the critters, and I can't do anything about it because I live next to a woods except a tall and deep fence.

You can get a game camera, it works on an infrared light and will take pictures of whatever is eating your garden, at at least the mystery will be solved.

I have started indoors, a packet of sweet pea's. They are very tall right now. I would like to plant them in a place in my front yard where they will look nice, but not sure if the sun they would get (from 2pm to sunset) would be enough. They are in shade until around 2pm. Does this sound like enough sun? Also, does anyone know if they transplant well? I have peat moss to mix in with the clay soil. Any opinions would be appreciated! And I am located in the midwest...so that would be zone 6, I believe. Thank you!

sweet peas are like moning glories, they can be planted just like any other flower but the need a trellis or something to vine on to they grow upward and tall.
Reply:Yes you can plant them out and they should be ok. They may take a little longer to establish with that amount of sunlight.

Don't forget to pinch off all but the bottom 4 sets of leaves. That will ensure the plants are thicker and that you will have more flowers. It may seem harsh but they will be much better for it.

it sounds as though the pea plants she has had in other years had the recessive white gene and the dominant purple one. hence, they were purple. this year, however, when the plants were "crossed", the luck of the draw determined that the dominant gene was not passed along, and so in the absence of a dominant gene to make the flowers purple, they are white.

No you cannot eat sweet peas, they are for flower purpose only, I really do not think they are poisonous, but they don't taste too good, they are a different strain from edible peas, bred purely for flowers.

I am planning on growing sweet peas along the wall of my house and am going to sow the seeds in long wooden planters - in light of this what do you recommend the size of these planters to be?

Last year, I had started sweetpeas in a plastic window box. It was about 7inches high X 5inches wide and 2 1/2 feet long. By the time they were 1/2foot tall their roots were congested('rootbound') with each other and had reached well to the bottom.It was a tangled mess and they couldn't be transplanted. So i suppose you must build a bit deeper than I did. I am trying sweetpeas again this year since they grow so well from seed. I already have several well on their way and planted in a garden bed with a 6' trellis behind them. It is important to have something for them to support themselves on at a very low height. My trellis goes all the way to ground level. Some ppl start at 1foot but that would not be good for these plants. Hope i helped some. This is only my second year gardenin %26amp; I'm still just learning.
Reply:That is probably a trial and error type of consideration.

You must allow probably 9" to 12" indepth. That allows for plenty of room for the roots. I would also go with the same size for the width. If you make have one too small and need it bigger then you have a size issues.

Edited: You need to consider the size being next to the house which will dwarf the looks of planter if not appropriate in size.
Reply:Well as far as depth an average window box depth of about 8 or 9 in. will be fine, Sweet peas are an annual and traditionally shallow rooted. Length depends on how much wall you are trying to cover. your real thing is going to be height I have been very successful with mine and have had vines over 10 feet tall. so on top of your container you need something for them to climb up. Make sure that what ever it is that it is secure, my first attempt at sweet peas was a success but the trellis was not secure and the weight of the vines kept pulling it down over time because it became so top heavy. Good luck.
Reply:You can use small windowbox-sized boxes if you like. I'd say a minimum of 5-6 inches deep and across...and as long as you like. If you use bigger boxes, they won't need to be watered as often. They small ones you'll need to water every day.
Reply:I've never grown sweet peas in containers, but I wouldn't imagine they need much room at all. I used to grow regular peas in a window box - you could probably use something just as small. Although if you get something bigger of course you could put in some nice bedding plants too - that's up to you.

Basically, I reckon anything will do, as long as you keep them fed and watered : )

I planted some in late may, they did horible. They are only 8 inches tall, and still haven't bloomed. I seen on TV that their sweet peas are about 6 feet tall right now. My sweet peas also did poorly. I suspect that our cool nights might have slowed down the growth. Or perhaps cool ground temperature. Try a weekly dose of a water soluble fertilizer, such as Ferti-lome 'rooting and blooming solution'.

Otherwise monitor the amount of water (not too much/ too little). Ofcourse, mine did poorly and then were finished off by the rabbits, the ravenous rabbits, so I couldn't try anything to encourage them to grow. I'll have to live vicariously through my answers...

Reply:1) Like peas, they need something to climb on. Do you have a trellis or strings or a fence out for them to grow up?

2) They don't like to get too dry. Water them every day.

3) Is your seed old? Was it packaged for this year?

4) Peas like really fertile topsoil w/ lots of manure/humus in it. How's your soil? Your county extension agent will test it for free for you. If it's too acidic or too alkaline, they can and will tell you what to do for free.

5) Are your sweet peas getting enough sun, or did you plant them in a place that's too shady?

6) Have you fertilized them? Try some MiracleGro and see if that helps.

7) Have you weeded around them so that they are not in any kind of competition w/ weeds or other plants for nutrients?

Anything you plan to freeze needs to be blanched for safety's sake. To prevent any bugs from being in your veggies when you freeze them and any bacteria that may have gotten on your peas from natural fertilizers, etc. If you Blanch then quick cool, it shouldn't effect the quality of the peas. Just takes a little time. Don't put in the freezer warm though. Causes them to shrivel.

I grew sweet peas and they are easy to grow, I had success, and they were delicious...The most important thing to remember is sweet peas are a cold weather plant...free of frost of course, I bought "Martha Stewart" seeds and followed the directions on the back, and it worked. Make sure when you plant you seeds that they are in a nice row, and not too crowded, that's where "thinning" comes in...Just remember that they cannot take the heat...and when watering them water them from the bottom (in the soil) and not overhead watering and they are subject to "mold disease", although I believe her seeds are "mold proof". If you're talking about the flowers, they are easy also, same rule applies about the heat, and they must have strings or a fence to climb.
Reply:Plant them in some new soil so that they have plenty of nutrients, keep them watered, especially during this hot weather, and they will need a trellis or something to climb up. When they are flowering you will need to cut them daily (they smell gorgeous indoors in a vase) and this will encourage them to keep on flowering. They are very easy to grow and a beautiful flower.
Reply:As you are not good with gardening the best thing to do would be to buy the plants now.

They are sold quite cheaply ready grown in little pots and usually come in to nurseries/ garden centres about the same time as the bedding does. Plant in the ground (adding some nice copmpost to the planting hole) not in pots as they never seem to do too well if confined and give them a good general purpose feed.

When they have finished flowering do not pull them out. Wait until the seeds have ripened...they are in pea pods and the pods will dry and go brown when the seed is ripe....and plant the seeds straight away where you want them to grow for the following year. That way you will have sweetpeas growing much earlier in the season and can keep an endless supply of them going. I do this with mine every year, works a treat :)

The only contorversey i have come across with sweet peas is whether you should soak the seeds prior to planting, some packets say you should and others don't mention it. I have tried both ways and both work but...soaking the seeds first i found that the soil was a bit stodgy and seeds were moldy green things that had managed to sprout!!!

Reply:Sweet peas should be planted in the late winter, February is a good time, they need the cold to germinate.I don't know if they will still be around for a December wedding as they will be killed back when it freezes. Tulips bloom in April-May and roses in the summer. You can force tulips to bloom, and some roses bloom continuously through the summer, depending on where you are.

I grow sweet peas every year, and they require a little more care than some flowers. I seem to have the best luck using trellises. You can get them inexpensively almost anywhere. Another thing that works well is fishing line. Get a dowel cut to the length you need, run it along the top of the fenceline, and tie fishing line, so that it hangs down to the ground. The vines will grow up them.
Reply:I've always been disappointed with climbing sweet peas, lovely flower, make good cut flowers for indoors, but too well liked by the slugs and snails - too high maintenance, in fact! As a suggestion, instead of using bamboo canes use 'pea sticks' if you have done any hard pruning earlier keep back 3' lengths of twigs and use these instead of bamboo - looks more natural.
Reply:I like bamboo stakes. Use four and position them like a tepee. Use natural color twine to tie them at the top. When the plant reaches the top of the "tepee", cut it so that the base bushes out more.

I planted my sweet peas in june, but they are only a foot high. I think I planted them late. I have a lot of morning glories, and in some places they are 8 feet high, and in some only 2 feet. There are some other flowers i'd like to start indoors too so they will grow, and bloom faster, like sweet wiliam, and other summer flowering annuals. Can I do sow my morning glories, sweet peas, and the other flowers indoors in march, will they bloom faster grow faster ect? I live in ontario zone 5.

Yes you can. I started seeds indoors in February for petunias and marigolds and morning glories and tomatoes and other things. It was a little too early. The morning glories got out of control! I had the plants under florescent lights. You put the lights just inches above the plants and they grow just great. I think March would be a good time to start them in your zone but be prepared to have them get pretty viney before it is time to plant them. Mine are growing all over the side of the house now and I had tomatoes before the end of June. I am in zone 5/6. The lights are important to keep the plants from getting too leggy. And you don't need grow-lights, any cheap florescent light works.

you should harden off if they are in side, they will hang down alright but as they get big you will need to put some stones over roots to hold them there
Reply:I have grown sweet peas in hanging baskets and in window boxes and they will hang nicely. I have had 4 or 5 foot long tendrils come out of window boxes. You can plant sweet peas this time of year as they like cooler weather.

If you want them to run down a wall you will have to use fencing or netting and use little twistie ties to force them the direction you want.
Reply:it should work but wait a little while longer before putting out and acclimatise first, you can also get trailing varieties which would work.

Why do my sweet peas not flower?

My sweet peas have healthy leaves and are six foot tall. But some of the plants produce stems with no flower heads on them.

Are you 100% sure that they haven't flowered? For awhile I was having that same problem with my lillies. Only to find out that deer were coming by at night and eating everything in site!! I've tried a couple of things to keep the deer away. I've sprinkled hair (yes hair! A friend told me that one) and i've had my dad pee around my garden. The deer smell the meat eater and they stay away. I'm not sure if this could be your problem but its worth a shot!
Reply:Stems on sweet peas can grow even taller than 6ft, mine do!

It still a little early, dont panic they will flower with next couple of weeks.

You may know but you can also buy an ever lasting sweet pea plant. Ive got a few. Had them 20 yers and they come back every year. Check out your local garden centre or nursery.
Reply:perhaps you didn't sow the seed early enough about December in a green house or the weather has been against you give them more time.Did you dig in plenty of compost into the ground before planting out?. My sweet peas are not flowering yet,either but my garden peas are about to flower.

Hi My sweet peas have finished flowering unfortunatley and am left with just the pods which have seeds in them I presume can anyone help with what I do with this pods and when. Many thanks

If the pods are still green you may still be in time to encourage more flowers by cutting them all off now and watering the plants well. It you want to save the seeds however wait till the pods start to lose their colour and then pick them and put them in a paper not plastic bag to finish ripening/drying out.If the peas are not the "vegatable" type do not eat them.
Reply:I'm going to take it you mean the type of flowers that are known as sweet peas and not the vegetable. If you're wanting to collect seed pods in order to use the seeds next year, you need to wait until they're dry. Try to do it before the first frost, because that will often cause the pods to open and the seeds fall out. Otherwise, just let them become quite dry before you pick them.
Reply:sweet peas and beans are really fun to grow, becasue they grow so quickly and the flowers are pretty.

You can take the pods off and eat them just as they are at any time when they seem ready. Some people like them to be really tiny and eat them whole when they are tender and young.

Some like to let the peas inside grow and then take those out of the pod and eat those by themselves.

Fresh vegetables are the best.. steam them, a tiny bit of salt, and there you go.. enjoy!
Reply:Since the sweet peas are done blooming, you can leave those pods on the vine until just before the first frost. Then pick the pods, take the seeds out and store them. They are free seeds for next years planting. Or, let mother nature take care of it. The pods will dry, hang on the vine and hopefully pop open to allow the seeds to drop and start new plants. I have found this to be the easiest, but do often times need to help the seeds out of the pod mid winter by rubbing them open. Happy planting. And aren't those sweet peas just the most fragrant for such a small flower. Love em.,
Reply:Because you have left the pods on this is why you have no flowers, once a plant thinks it has enough seeds it will stop producing flowers, when growing in future take seed pods as soon as they begin if you want the seed for the following year leave to ripen you will be able to feel the pea's inside the pod,

for all plants as the flowers die of you should remove them except when growing on for seed's.

It's a side dish so it doesn't have to be anything fancy, but I've never made anything with Sweet Peas so I don't know how to cook them...

Reply:Canned sweet peas aren't too good cooked. Chilled, with diced celery and onion, chopped boiled egg, mayo (wasabi mayo is a nice exotic way to kick it up), and just a touch of red wine vinegar and you have a nice pea salad.

Reply:If they are in a can don't add anything because the texture and flavour wont blend the exception would be if you have canned carrots or yams (you might try canned sliced mushroom the flavours will be similar but the texture will be different)and you could put them into the pot with the peas. Similar texture %26amp; flavour. Don't cook them, they only need to be heated for serving. When I was single, I was very good friends with cans. If it was in a can or a jar that was good enough for me. Things change but I learned a lot in those years.

It's a quick casserole consisting of pasta (something like rotini or bow tie pasta), canned sweet peas, a can or two (depending on how much you like it) of tuna fish, some mustard, a little mayonnaise, and salt and pepper. For an added kick, add some crushed chili flakes, and a pinch of nutmeg.

Another quick vegetable base would be to take some of the baby carrots from the grocery store, boil/steam them until tender. Warm up the peas after you remove the carrots. In a medium saucepan (big enough to hold the vegetables) melt a few tablespoons of butter, 1/4 cup of chicken stock/broth until it simmers. Add the peas and carrots and stir to mix with the buttered broth. Remove from the heat and stir in some chopped tarragon or fresh chopped mint.

Depending how many cans you use, add a small jar of pimentoes drained, some chopped onion, 2 chopped hard boiled eggs, salt and pepper, bit of prepared mustard, and miracle whip salad dressing. As mentioned, plucking off the tip help the plant to make more side shoots (branches out) and thus one plant will cover a larger section of fence. To keep the plant flowering as long as possible, even up to the first frost, you have to keep snipping off flowers for the vase, and all bits of flowers that have finished flowering. If you let the flowered bits become seeds, then the plant will not last the whole summer. The whole idea of a plant flowering, is so that the plant can make seeds to reproduce itself. If you keep on removing the seeds then the plant will continuously make new flowers for its reproduction. If you want to keep a few seed for next year´s so wings, it´s wise to tie a bit of wool around the stem of a special colour to remind yourself not to cut it off.

Reply:plucking and pinching are two different things ... to get more flowers you need to "pinch" out the growing tips ... after you have got 3 true pairs of leaves pinch out the growing tip ... then once they start flowering you need to pick the flowers daily ... so the plants don't stop producing flowers
Reply:Some clever varieties are naturally dwarf and bushy, pinching out is not required. With the standard tall growing Spencer varieties you can nip out the growing tips at 2 full leaves.
Reply:If you pluck to the tops, you will encourage the side growth, this will delay the full top growth It will not affect the timing of flowering, which will be more since the side growth will have more buds. this is usually done on mums to have more flowers. It is call heading.
Reply:No need as that just makes them bushier. What you need to do is to remove all the flowers as they die. Once they set seed then they will stop flowering if the seed pods are allowed to develop.
Reply:If you remove the growing tips at the top of a plant it causes it to bush out so once you've established a good height spread you could do this to give more horizontal growth and hopefully lots more flowers :)

Aphids are usually little whitish waxy looking things that gravitate to roses. You can kill those by spraying a solution of water with a little dish soap mixed in. Take a piece of an affected plant to your local nursery - someone there should be able to direct you.
Reply:buy a big bag of lady bugs at your local nursery!!! They really do work..my parents used to have huge aphid probs and the lady bugs worked really well
Reply:Treat the aphids. There isn't much you can do for the virus, sad to say. I'd purchase some oil at your local garden store (Ortho makes it). Aphids can transmit viruses, (can also be transmitted by thrips or leafhoppers, etc) so if you have peas that are not affected yet, get those aphids!

How old are the pea plants? Do you think they are naturally dying off, maybe it is too hot for them. If they are grying out, that isn't a good thing. They may be stressed if they aren't getting enough water. They may need some TLC.

As far as the virus, are you able to replant your peas or do they carry sentimental or other value? You should try to replant with something else, or a virus-resistant type of pea (it should tell you on the seed packet). Make sure you gather all the debris from the ground, since some viruses can survive in the ground without a host. Viruses can also survive on weeds (alternate hosts), so get rid of those as well.

There are no chemical controls for viral diseases in plants. Do not apply a fungicide because a virus is not a fungus, and it will not work. The best control is to plant disease resistant plants, sterilize garden equipment used to prevent the spread of the virus, control weeds and insects to prevent spread.
Reply:Gosh, I don't know for sure. The aphids are sucking the life out of the plant so I guess I would treat that first. Just a guess. Are you talking about flowers or English peas, the vegetable. Because if it's the flower, you might try Orthonex, which contains both an insecticide and fungus control, but you can't put it on anything edible. Sweet pea seeds have very hard coatings and it is best to scarify them before planting.Use a sharp knife to chip the outer covering of the seed otherwise they seem to take for ever to sprout.Soaking in water for a day or two also helps the process.Once they get going in good conditions ,they do grow fast but in my experience,they need fairly cool conditions to bloom well.Temps of 60 to 65 F.Hope this helps.

as long as the soil is not too moist. Test it by taking a handful and squeezing it. If it stays together as a lump you are good to go. Sweet peas like to germinate in cool soil.

Right now where I am I am planning on sowing them on Friday.

I would ( and will) soak them in a glass of water for 24 hours before hand. This just gives them a helping hand in braking the outside protective coating.

Reply:You didn't say where you live, but in general after danger of frost has past for spring planting, and you can also plant in fall when the heat of summer has started to fade and you expect slightly cooler days. heat will shorten the life of the plants and they should bloom until first fairly hard frost. to speed up germination soak the seeds in water over night and plant about 1 " deep-Mitch
Reply:I would plant them now. A little trick of the trade is to soak your seeds over night in lukewarm water. More on the cooler side than warm. This helps them germinate faster. Then follow the package directions and make sure you remember that they need quite a bit of sun. I love sweet peas!
Reply:In Southern Australia we generally start planting sweet peas on St Patricks day (17 March). This is one of those old rules of gardening.

Using this rule of thumb anytime in early/mid Autumn would be appropriate. Things are cooling down after summer and the summer annuals are past their best. Time to replace them.

i planted some sweet peas a few weeks ago next to a support about 4 feet tall.. but now the sweet pea plants have already reached the height of 4 feet and keep growing.. they will soon have no support and im scared they may not flower without adequate support. will my plants die will i have flowers this year.. expert gardeners .. please help..

You can let sweet peas trail or support them on a trellis, but they're not dependent on being supported to flower. You could let them "weep" down from the top of the trellis or weave them into the trellis going downward, once they've topped out.

(Wow, what zone are you that your sweet peas are already that high?!)

I envy you - mine are a scant 6" high, and I was pleased at that much progress this early in the season! :-)

Problem with my Sweet Peas?

This year i grew Sweet peas from seed in containers in the house they were on the window sill until i planted them in May they are in a good sunny position in the garden and they have really strong stalks i've been proping them up to stop them trailing too much and they are really huge but so far i've still only got foilage and no flowers ,the sweet pea that i just scattered in a flower pot have lots of flowers have i did something wrong or am i just being impatient ,I did have a problem at first with slugs but that was dealt with and the plant has really grown but where is my flowers.Any use ful ideas will go a long way to solve my problem

Oh dear, don't panick, this year has been a very trying year as far as plants go.

I was in the same position only three weeks ago. I grow them up a trellis on the end of one of my raised beds, they became so high they too started to hang awkwardly. My hubby decided he couldn't get round with the lawn mower, so, what do you think he did? took the sears and reduced them by half, I wasn't at all pleased, however I couldn't believe my eyes when i saw them flowering profusely last Friday.

I'm cutting them already and giving them to all my neighbours who comment how nice they are.

I honestly couldn't believe it. Maybe you could try cutting them back in this way.

p.s I live in a flooded area with heavy clay soil
Reply:The nitrogen levels may have been too high in the soil where the ones that are not blooming are located. Nitrogen promotes leaf growth. Add some potassium to the soil, it promotes blooms. It's available at some nurseries and Granges as a supplement. There is likely enough potash, which promotes root health, since your plants are otherwise healthy. Depending on how much warm weather you have left this season you may get blooms.
Reply:No you are not being inpatient. Maybe you are like me. Most things turn out alright, but sweet peas seem to be a rule to themselves. I have an aunt who has a display every year without ( yes I am green with envy, forget the fingers.)

Anyway you have a month to go yet if we get a burst of summer sunshine.
Reply:I've also had problems with my sweet peas this year, mainly that they've been extremely late in flowering.

what you need to remember, is when the seedlings are very young, you need to pinch out the top growth as soon as you get a side shoot. This encourages a bushy, healthier plant and more importantly - lots more Flowers.

Reply:Too near the end of the season to really make changes this year. Next year, nip out the plant from the 3rd double set of leaves and keep doing this on every branch till the plants grow to the height you want them to be. Nip off any dead flowers as soon as you see them and you should get a continual, bumper crop of flowers.
Reply:Plants are traditionally sown in pots in the autumn as this produces sturdy specimens that will be ready for planting out early next spring. They are quite hardy and can be safely grown in a cold frame but will require occasional extra protection during periods of extreme cold and hard frosts. Or, in spring, sow seeds directly where you want them to grow.

Sweet peas are hungry plants and love rich soil with plenty of added humus, and as much sun as they can get.

Reply:Sweet peas will do better if you get a lot of rain, they need a lot of water to produce long stalks, potash for a good show of flowers. Mine were and still are excellent, the only problem due to the weather was the green fly. I have known this to happen in the past but always put it down to bad seed. Sweet pea are deep rooted and need lots of good feeding. They should be well into flowering by now.Dig in lots of well rotted manure next spring before planting.
Reply:I love sweet peas, they hate me. My grand mother, mother, land lady in college, everyone in England, including my ex-wife grew them with hardly a second glance. Worked with the annuals for years and nary a blossom. Switched to perennials from locally grown seed two years ago. Last year produced a huge tangled mess of vegetative growth from a dozen plants and TWO BLOSSOMS!!! This year I decided stick with what I know and planted Morning Glories. What do you suppose beat the Glories to the top of the trellis, a single white Sweet Pea with hundreds of blooms. But, get this, after all my trials and tribulations, they are scent free - BUMMER!!! So I'm hoping your question will answer my dilemma as well. If not I plan to try again next year using Glories as a nurse crop. RScott.

I am so in love with sweet pea flowers I was going to try them in a large container (18-20 inch)

There are both the short bush types (24 inch tall) and the regular vines.

I dont know if I should plant the short ones, or the tall ones with a small trelis.

I used to grow the tall ones up a trellis in a container in the north or England %26amp; they did really well. I cannot grow them at all in south west USA though. So much of it depends where you are. I would definitely try the taller ones though, they are far more beautiful (to me) than the shorter ones.

If you keep cutting the flowers, %26amp; taking them into the house to make the house smell great, they should bloom for a long time for you. you can always tip them if they start to get too tall too. They kind of enjoy some pruning %26amp; attention as they are growing, they are well worth the trouble though.
Reply:Grow the short ones, they are very good and I think the climbing ones will get too big for a small trellis. Also it may be hard to keep the moisture levels up in a pot to keep all the top growth going with the large ones. Good luck, I love sweet peas also.
Reply:They should be fine in a large pot. Just allow enough room between plants so that they don't compete with each other. They love full sun and are heavy feeders. So fertilize several times throughout the growing season. They can also be planted in hanging baskets and cascade beautifully. You just have to have the hanging basket about 5-6 ft. above the ground.

Okay, this is my first garden. So I am learning everything as I write this. Things are growing amazingly well at my new house!

I planted sweet pea seeds and laid them along the front yard fence. It is about five feet high. The sweet peas have grown to be beautiful, extremely fragrant and everyone loves them.

BUT they are about eight feet high!

I am wondering if I cut them back about two feet or so will they keep blooming or will the think they are done for the season?

I work at a nursery, but we do not have sweet peas there. I called the Nursery I bought the seeds from and I got two different answers.

One person said they'd be fine...the other said not to do it.

I will probably risk it and use it as a learning experience but if any of you have had sweet peas before and know the answer...I would appreciate it.

I also looked them up in many books..but could not find anything about cutting them back.

Removing the terminal (top) bud will force auxilliary (lower) buds to grow creating a more compact bushy plant. Pruning them down to 2 feet is a little extreme. Fertilize after pruning to encourage faster recovery growth.
Reply:i dont know that i would cut them.. i would probably try training them to grow down and then back up... like a weaving kinda thing.... cutting them would make the plant spend a lot of energy on recovering from the cut spot.. so maybe at the end of the season cut them back good luck!

In Quebec (translated from French), terms of endearment are: my little cabbage, my little rabbit, my little kitten. I've never heard anyone here in the U.S. use the term "my little cabbage" but if someone calls you that in Quebec, they really, really love you (like a grandmother loves you).

When you love someone so much that you would die for them, names like that just come naturally. I do not have children but I love my neice that much and i can't help but calling her sweetheart, baby girl, etc.

Reply:its quite easy to get into a habit of calling your child something else - when the baby is so new and you are still getting used to the name you have decided on and sometimes you just pick a nickname and it sticks - I call my daughter pumkin and my darling (she really likes this one) and her father calls her rastis!! and her grandmother calls her charlie!! so she has lots of different nicknames.
Reply:Starts from when they are in there belly I think. You have no idea what your having (boy/girl) so you need a name that you can use. Apparently it does help talking to you belly in the later stages and the unborn child recognises voices and sounds. Calling a unborn child a pet name could calm it. I keep calling my belly 'baby'.

"Dude" would make him feel like they are equal and can trust each other, while "little guy" would stress that dad is better than son. In all cases, the real word I like to hear is my own name. That leaves out all hidden meanings, allowing me to choose who I prefer to be.

Reply:If you're concerned about anything that has to do with your child's health, go ahead and call the doctor. They aren't going to mind, and it will help put your mind at ease if there is no problem - or it could help prevent a problem.
Reply:What kind of small metal object is it? To be on the safe side I would call my pediatrician and see what they suggest..there is the possibility that the child could get sick from whatever it is made of.

If you have a children's hospital nearby you might be able to give them a ring and see what the say...

If they are concerned they will usually run an x-ray and see where the object is, how big it is and in most cases it can be safely passed in the stool.

My son has a hobby of eating small barrettes and so far they've all made the trip out so I wouldn't worry too much, some, but not too much. Usually the day before it comes through he's super cranky and restless and it takes 2-3 days or so be prepared for the wait.

I have seeds for sweet pea, forget-me-not, and hollyhock. I realize these have little, if any, chance of doing well in Florida, but I want to try, so what would be the best month to plant them? I'm in Central Florida. thanks :)

Planting English seeds in Florida?
Actually all these plants should grow in Florida. You just need to be a little more particular when and where you plant them!!!

Hollyhock seeds should be planted in the ground in late summer or early fall (for next year's flowers). After they have flowered, cut the stalk to about 9 inches from the ground, continue to feed and water to encourage late summer re-bloom. I would try planting some in full sun and some in partial shade to see which do best. Needs regular water.

Forget-me-nots grow best in cool, moist areas, so I would definitely grow these in partial shade. Keep well watered. I would plant these seeds in late summer or early fall. These plants self seed.

For sweet peas, depending on the type you have (early flowering or spring flowering) you should plant between late summer/ early fall or late fall /early winter. If you don't know which you have, I would plant them after it has cooled off in your area. To hasten germination, soak the seeds for a few hours before planting.

It depends on my mood. My first favorite is Japanese Cherry Blossom. I usually wear it in the spring. It has an exotic scent to it.. It has cherry blossom,vanilla,oriental woods and mimosa. I have received alot of compliments on this one. Two people have bought this scent after liking it on me.

My next favorite is Moonlight Path. It has a romantic scent to it. I usually wear it in the fall into winter. It has lavender, roses, violets and musk. It has somewhat of a clean smell to it.

Thirdly, I like Cotton blossom. I like to wear it all summer because it has a verrrrrry clean smell to it. I use the foaming soap in my bathroom and when guests come out from there, they always remark on how nice it smells.

Pernell Whittaker at 135? Unbeatable?

When Whittaker moved up to to 147, he got himself up against some much larger opposition. But was the primed Pernell Whittaker at 135 unbeatable by any other lightweight or lower ever? Could anyone have scored well enough against the crafty lefty to win a fight? Chavez was an all-time great and maybe took 2 rounds from Sweet Pea.

my man, sweet p....hmmmmm. HE was and still is one of the greatest southpaws in the history of the sweet science. I have mentioned this before---Sweet P would have been TOTALLY unbeatable at 135. Far superior speed, agility, footwork, and workmanship. TOO crafty, too smart, and simply Mr. TOO DAMN GOOD. Enough said. I know that others may think otherwise, I respect that---but I don't buy it. WHITAKER at 135 takes no prisoners, and more importantly NO Losses!

Nice theory Elmer Fudd, but it doesn't work because:

1. 135 to 147 is the hardest jump in boxing. Duran did it immediately, and beat one of the greatest Welters ever - an almost unbelievable acheivement!

2. Duran was already a lttle past prime when he fought Leonard the first time- he had already been champion for 8 years!

3. Duran blew up to almost 200 pounds partying between those fights ( he was practically crowned the King of Panama!) and had to crash hard to make weight. Leonard had heard about what Duran was doing down in Panama, and pressed for a quick re-match.

4. Even with all that working against him, Duran was still very much in that second fight, and quit because of Ray's clowning, not because he was getting beat. He felt like if you wanna clown - go to the circus! (Although I feel his having to crash before the fight had somthing to do with it.)
Reply:I was a big fan of Pernell Whitaker's but no, he wasnt unbeatable by any means at 135. Hector Camacho in the early to mid 80s was faster and had a better punch. By 1986 when Edwin Rosario got to him he was on his way down but he had the speed, southpaw style and enough pop in his punches to give Pernell fits. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is too big and too fast and at 135 I could see beating Pernell as well. I dont know if Duran had the style to beat Pernell. He was strong and busy but he could be hit and Pernell was so awkward, like a Winky Wright but even more so, that he would have made Duran quit even earlier than Ray did in 1980. As for Pete winning 8 of 12 rounds against DLH, I dont think so. Scoring is so subjective. Just because someone says it on here doesnt mean that is automatically the way it should have been. I dont bother listen to those HBO announcers because they are so biased that by the time the fight is over whoever they are pushing has convinced anyone watching on tv that their boy won and that is not always the case. Oscar has close fights against John John Molina, Pernell Whitaker, Ike Quartey, Felix Trinidad, Felix Sturm, and Floyd Mayweather Jr. and unfortunately in the end, the only scores that matter are the three judges because those are the ones that go down in history.

Reply:seriously...you will smell good to guys no matter what you use... go with something you like and feel comfortable with... but personally, I am a mango/citrus guy.
Reply:Vanilla is the best smelling thing in the world when you open a bottle of real vanilla and take a deep inhale -- but the fake vanilla smell found in all manner of consumer schlock is horrible!! Coconut smells a little too beachy (like suntan oil or something). Sweet pea sounds nice.

Well awhile back he initiated a kiss...and i sort of didn't accept...i was wary and confused.. Now i want a kiss i want to see what im missing should i ask him for one or just be like so..can i get that kiss now..

It's totally normal to kiss him, however you shouldn't talk about it or ask for permission

when sitting close to him, there will be a moment of silence when no one talks, take advantage of it, lean your head forward to him like you are going to kiss him, but stop half the way and look at his lips or into his eyes, so if he is not a total dumb ***, he should read the signal and kiss you like never before

I always did this with my girlfriend and she always kissed me although i was the first one who initiated the move

I'm just curious. I recently weighed Marshall and Wylie. Marshall weighs 16 pounds, Wylie 6. I haven't done Sweet Pea yet, but figure she's 2.

a Ragdoll can be 25 pounds, while a smaller short haired breed will be around 7-8 pounds, persians around 10-11.

I had another mutt cat who was about 11 pounds, but she was just a tad round, not quite fat. If my female mixed tabby was 16 pounds, she'd be FAT and would need to loose weight because her bone structure is medium to small. If my 16 pound cat weighed about 18 pounds, I'd start to worry, cuz then he'd probably be on the fat side. If my bengal wieghed 16 pounds, he'd be really fat because of his breed, and body structure. Even though he's at the low end of his weight, he's supposed to be really sleek and agile due to the asian leopard blood. he could probably use another pound. You can get a chart from your vet to see if they are over or underweight.

Discipline and integration of cats?

Can anyone help me? Marshall lately has been banging on the door from 3:15 A.M. to early morning, and meowing. He has plenty of food and water, the litter box is nearby. But it's annoying and gives me headaches right in middle of peaceful sleep. I've tried to ignore him but he acts up. Is there any way to discipline him to stop and be patient. I know he wants full freedom to be with me. But it won't happen until the cats are fully integrated-Sweet Pea, besides didn't fight the three days before Easter, didn't fight them a few days after Easter, when lately Wylie hissed at her yesterday-yet. We've tried vanilla extract and baby powder, and nothing worked. Is there any resolve to this? Please help.

For HOURS before you go to bed, keep the active, do NOT let him sleep and about an hour before, No activity, but no sleeping either. Worked for my two little boy cats and I still do that. Also, when he bothers you at night (I also did this with the boys) I'd open the door just a tiny bit and give him a squirt or two with water and say in low tone "NO" or "STOP IT" Now I can leave my door open and they normally will just go to sleep or play elsewhere. I still keep the water bottle handy in case they want to claw the laundry basket or get into the closet. This is just normal for people who are owned by cats. I have three.
Reply:Try bathing them together. Take them all in the bathroom and wash them. Not only will this traumatic experience bring them closer, but now they will all smell the same.

I remeber he had Daisy his girl friend babysit sometimes, but they mostley stayed with him, where did they come from? i've worked in a small office for 2 yrs. there are 6 of us, all female. 3 are management. i try to get along with everybody and stay positive, but i am having trouble with the "new girl". i don't know if it's because she is young or that she is from another country and speaks w/a "cute" accent. but she is lazy and barely gets up from her seat while everyone does her work! they file her work, excuse her mistakes - while i get scolded for every little thing. at the end of the day while i'm running around doing closing procedures she is sitting and chatting with them. i don't know who to go to - as the it's the "bosses" who think she is (and call her) a "princess" and "sweet pea". also i believe she is undermining me and the other coworker. i heard the manager talking about transfering my other coworker and she's a bright, hard worker like me. ever hear of such a thing??

This is concerning Sweet Pea. For nearly almost a year, she's been having an urinary problem by peeing on my mom's bed and in potted plants. My brother said on Easter, that it's an unfixable problem and can only get worse. He said the only solution was to put her to sleep. He said that even the vet has no idea why it happened. We thought it was stress from the two cats, or was mad at us. Is there medication or surgery to fix the bladder problem, other than putting her to sleep? Have this happened to anyone else?

Urinary problem?
Yes, it can be fixed very easily.

There's no way she needs to be put to sleep and frankly I can't imagine any Vet saying that.

She needs to be taken to a Vet and treated, sounds very much like she has a Urinary Tract Infection...that's treated with antibiotics.

It shouldn't be let go though, because if it is if can cause life threatening complications.

Reply:Please don't put her down just for inappropriate urination. Maybe your not keeping her box clean enough. Sometimes cats like to go in plants because they love to scratch in dirt. I had a cat that started peeing in my large house plants but once I started letting her go outside, she stopped peeing in the plants. Also, she might have a urinary tract infection. Take a urine sample to the vet and put her on antibiotics.
Reply:My cat was doing that too. We adopted her from the SPCA probably because of her urinary problem, her previous owners didn't know how to make her stop probably. We got a urinalysis done which showed that she had crystals in her urine and we put her on a prescription cat food diet for 3 months to dissolve the crystals. Her previous owners probably weren't feeding her healthy cat food.

Once treatment is done you need to feed a high quality diet to prevent urinary problems in the future. Don't feed the crappy expensive food the vet sells. You will need to go to a pet store for healthier food.

To me it seems the cats problem is normal not a sickness.

Cats pee in potted plants, flower beds and sandboxes because they think they are litter boxes (if they have done it once they continue to smell they have gone there before and do it again). Also if you have brought an new cat into the house the cat is probably mad and marking territory and showing how unhappy he is about it.. Dogs will do the same thing.

The cat is peeing on your moms bed because it is showing its unhappiness.. and it smells its peed there before.

Even though you wash the comforter and sheets a cat can still smell its pee.

Replace the sheets and comforter with NEW ones. Then keep your moms B/door shut to keep the cat out.

Or you may try one of these remedies:

1) Place double sided tape on the bed (cats hate tape sticking to them)

2) At Pets Mart or Walmart sell deterrent sprays that you can spray on a couple old or cheap beach towels and then lay on the bed.

(For the flower pots you may need to change the soil out and place the double sided tape across the top of the pots or spray the deterrent spray on cotton balls and place in the pots on top of the soil. Or put some strong CHEAP Decaf coffee grounds in some pantyhose footie's and tie shut then place in the pots. ( I sprinkled the coffee in my flower beds and it stopped a cat that was doo doing in my flower beds)

Reply:i think you need to go to another vet and get a second opinion. it's always a good idea to go to other doctors and explore other options before doing something so drastic like putting your kitty to sleep! is your brother a doctor or a vet? you really don't want to regret your choice if you find out later that something could have been done. i don't think that this is a good enough reason to put her down anyway unless she is truly suffering and there is absolutely NO other way to help her. please explore ALL of your options before you take that path.

Reply:Please do not put her down because it is common, i know people wont agree, but mum's cat has it and she was put on antibiotics and special food, takes a while but they will be totally fine. but with the tract problem you would of seem a little blood, my cat is getting old and has been through having cats in and out and she was peeing on my bed and everywhere else. Make the Kitty litter as big and clean and private as possible but there could be other problems with not caring where she goes to the toilet, stress in 1 and not feeling secure is another. Reply:Potted plants that she can reach, she will go in, because they love the feel of the dirt. I am not sure about mom's bed. Why is she going only on mom's bed? I sounds like the area needs to be cleaned. Even something that is clean to you, may not be clean to her. She will be able to smell it and keep going back there. Strip the bed and wash the bedding. Then get cat urine odor remover and saturate the area of the bed where she pees. Leave it wet for as long as you can, it takes a while for the enzymes to work to kill the smell. It is worth the hassle. You do not want to put your baby to sleep.
Reply:My cat is doing the same thing. Seems if you leave them alone for long periods of time or dont pay them enough attention, they act out by using beds as a litter box. Also if you have two cats, then Sweet Pea might be marking her territory. Putting her down is not the only option. Yes, there is medication you can give her, just ask your vet.
Reply:My cat also had/has a big problem with peeing on my bed. Everyone told me it was a UTI and to rush him to the vet ASAP, but I was skeptical and couldn't afford it anyway. So I did the simple thing--besides buying a waterproof cover and cleaning everything thoroughly--I bought a different brand of cat litter. Turns out my Theo didn't like the feel of the other brand. He will still pee on the bed if I do not keep the box clean. (It's also possible your cat may confuse the smell of the detergent your mom uses with the smell of her urine--surprisingly enough, they are similar to cats. Try the cheaper solution first and if that doesn't work, then take her to the vet.)

So for the last 16 years we kept washing the walls where he sprayed .Scolding is useless he has no idea this is not acceptable.I find it helps if you keep other cats away from the house because by spraying he lay's claim to his territory . Reply:First, has the vet done a urinalysis on her recently? If she has a urinary infection or crystals, she'll need medication and/or a special diet to address the problem.

If she checks out OK at the vet, there are some things you can do to address the problem. First, make sure the litterbox is appealing to her, and that she has enough boxes (she should have at least 2 boxes available if she's an only cat - the ideal number is 1 box for each cat +1 extra). Some cats are picky about their box and will go elsewhere if the box, the litter, its location, the litter mat, etc. are unpleasant for the cat. One of my cats went through a phase of peeing on the bed when she was about 13 or 14. She checked out OK at the vet, so I couldn't figure it out. It went on for several months, and I was at wit's end before I finally found the solution. In her case, it turned out to be from a combination of dissatisfaction with the litterbox, and stress. Cats can be stressed out by many things, some of which may not be obvious. For my cat, what worked was a combination of things:

1) Clean the mattress thoroughly with an enzyme cleaner to remove any traces of odor, or replace the mattress

2) Cover the mattress with a waterproof mattress pad to prevent damage after it's been cleaned or replaced

3) Make the bed a less appealing surface to go, by covering it with a waterproof tarp when not in use. You can make the plants less appealing by covering the soil with decorative rocks at least 1" in size.

4) Make the litterbox more appealing, by adding an extra box, getting larger boxes, getting rid of my Astroturf litter mat, using Cat Attract litter, and cleaning all boxes twice daily.

5) Use a Feliway comfort Zone plug-in diffuser to reduce stress levels

She was happy with the changes in her litterboxes and the stress reduction techniques, and calmed down and started using the box regularly, so after about a month I felt save removing the tarp from the bed. I sprayed a little Feliway spray on my bedding for a month after removing the tarp, and then tapered off gradually. She hasn't lapsed since I made the changes, and it's been about 5 years now. I still keep the waterproof mattress cover on, just in case, and because it helps my allergies.

Reply:Cats often "confuse " potted plants with cat boxes, I have gotten into the habit of placing a layer of garden fabric over the soil and covering it with a layer of river stones or the pretty glass pebbles you can find in craft stores. It creates a surface that cannot be mistaken for litter or the great outdoors, and it is quite attractive as well!

As for the bed, if your mother is a "favorite person" the cat may be "marking" the bed to claim ownership of her, especially if the bed smells strongly of her perfume, shampoo, or whatever makes mom smell like mom. ( I have to get all over my sons to not leave sweaty clothes laying around for the same reason!) You might want to try covering the bed with a comforter that Mom does not sleep with, in order to mask her familiar scent. If not, A cat will often go back to the same spot if it smells like an "okay place to go". My understanding is that vinegar is very useful for cleaning pet stains so that they won't go back. Oh! I have also installed a new cat box in a troublesome spot on occasion, to accommodate an older, or lower cat in the "pecking order" - Mom may not like the idea of a cat box in her bedroom, but it beats finding "surprises"!

If keeping the cat box very clean, having one more cat box than cats, they will intimidate each other from getting to them- (I have even put the 'dominate" cat in a separate room for certain portions of the day to insure the other has free reign for a while) and seriously cleaning "used" areas does not help, it's definitely time to go the vet to check her out.

We are having an outdoor ceremony at a little country Bed and Breakfast this summer, and I want to find some flowers that are not too formal, but not too country (a.k.a. wildflowers). I love wildflowers, but I want this to be just a notch above being that country and simple. It is my wedding, after all! :)

I love daisies, roses, sweet pea (that's what my mom has always called me), sunflowers, ranunculus, gerbera daisies, and mini calla lilies. I was just going to go with white flowers because the contrast with the blue dresses would be pretty. The color also has to look okay with the red roof on the B%26amp;B (but no red flowers please, just colors that would look okay and not clash with the red roof since we are thinking about having the ceremony leading up the steps of the house.)

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Pictures EVEN BETTER!!! :)

my fiancee's mother sent me a $50 gift card to Bath and Body Works for my birthday. i've never really experienced Bath and Body Works because i've never really been that girlie. well now i like wearing perfume and lotion and stuff like that, but i dont know which scents are the best at B%26amp;BW and I don't want to spend 1800 hours smelling all their stuff.

I -love love love- their new temptations line. It's got this Orange smelling stuff...and their banana smells just like Laffy Taffy...Their tea and such is good, too. I'd definitely ask about the Temptations line when you get there, and smell that. :D

I like the coconut stuff, it's very nice ^^ And yes, Sweet Pea smells lovely. And my cousin's gaga over the Lime Verbana. But my FAVORITE is the French Vanilla...It smells so sweet, I love it.

But really, you should just take the time to smell some of them yourself. Nobody knows as well as you do what you like. :]

Reply:If you like sweet pea then you may like some of the milder scents such as dancing waters, a new scent that is awesome. I like moonlight path too it is a laid back but nice smelling one.

I personally like their fruit scents. My favorites are Mango Mandarin and sparkling Peach.

Also their Henri Bendel line is heavenly if you find it on sale (it is a pricey line).

If you are a candle girl, I can vouch for their lasting scents. On that front I like to use Fresh linen or Cotton scents for the house (candle or wall fragrance) because they give the house a nice clean smell. Great idea if you have any pets.

My boyfriend and I have been dating seriously for a year, and we have talked and agreed to get married after I graduate from college. However, he was married for five years and has been divorced for three. Normally, this wouldn't have been a problem. But his ex-wife is crazy to put it mildly.

Every time we are at a social event together, she will come over and flirt with my boyfriend relentlessly. Not only will she flirt, but she touches him a lot right in front of me. She also will call him to do favors for her like move an enterntainment set, even though she has guy friends or her brothers to help her.

Also, I am eight years younger than my boyfriend so she will call me names such as, "kid," or "sweet pea," in a very condescending tone in front of people.

How can I make her understand that her ex is with ME now? How can I make my boyfriend understand that she is hurting my feelings? How can stop being jealous of his past with her and stop getting so hurt easily by her?

1) Telling her off. What I'd do is calling her a bleeding bumfucked slag that deserves to eat **** from her *** and then throw up a monkey. lmao

well i looked up the zone for the last expected frost date in my area (pa) and it is march 30- april 30. do you think i should start my seeds indoors first? i'll give you a list of the seeds i bought (there are a ton they were all on sale!!!)

should i start any of these indoors? if so.. what do i need?! where do i get it? and how much will it cost me? reminder: i'm not growing all of these.. so are there any that you would reccommend out of these choices- any that require less care or bloom quickly? hope long will it take for them to be able to eat (veggies and fruit) or bloom (flowers)

Your peppers,onions should be started inside. You missed tomatoes and cucumbers and the easiest to grow radishs. Even if you don't eat these there fun to grow and the nieghbors will help with the consumption and make you some friends to boot. Go to wallmart,kmart or the like(garden section) and they will set you up with everything you need. Go to gurneys.com and they have alot of good tips on caring for your garden. A few garden problems....?

1. Half of my garden is INCREDIBLY shady and rarely gets direct sunlight; all that grow there are these odd ferns and fungi which I can't stand and have to keep trying to pull up. What can I put there instead?

2. During the winter, half of one of my rose plants snapped off! Will it be ok/what do I do? Do I really need to fertilize them again in spring?

3. What kind of light do sweet pea bushes need?

A few garden problems....?
I have a similar shade problem. You can try plants like hosta, they do well in shade. There are many many varieties of hosta, some a very beautiful. There are decorative ferns that do well in the shade too. I have a Japanese Fern that has purple tints on the ends of the leafs. Another plant that does well in the shade is rhododendron or azalea, they are very low maintenance too.

Your roses will probably be fine. If you live where it gets really cold on the winter (I live in New England) you should mound up composted cow manure around the base of the rose, right about the time that the ground freezes. When the ground thaws out (tulips start to grow) remove the manure to form a well around the base of your rose. When your rose starts to show some life then you want to start fertilizing it. You should fertilize your roses on a regular basis and be sure they are in a very sunny spot. You can cut off all the broken parts of the rose. New growth will appear under where it was cut back.

I have tried Cherry Blossom and I think it smells very wonderful. It is kinda like a suddle smell of Cherrys.. or well it does to me at least! I would suggest it over sweet pea.. but warm vanilla sugar and cherry blossom is about neck and neck!

but if you're goin for a new smell I would suggest Victoria Secret's Pure Seduction.. I would recommend this stuff over anything.. well I hope I helped

Reply:Pesonally I like Sweet Pea better becuase it's not strong but it is more powerful than Cherry Blossom. Cherry Blossom is a light fragrance, like a Light Cherry Sobert Ice Cream, not thick or heavy. I tried warm vanilla sugar but I didn't care for it and gave it away. Sweet Pea is my favorite followed by Cherry Blossom, then Japanese Cherry Blossom (Even lighter smell). If you like Sweet Pea you may like Cherry Blossom, it's just a lighter smell.

Also, they are on sale at bath and body works.com today. Go for it.

Reply:It smells so good. I would pick warm vanilla sugar any day though. I don't like vanilla scent at all but this is such a good smell. Sweet pea is good to but too strong. They have another one I believe it is fig with something. That is very good and the citrus one is good too.
Reply:I HAVE! But my favorite's WHITE Cherry Blossom.. I love it. I think WHITE Cherry Blossom is the best smelling Bath %26amp; Body works scent ever.. after Cucumber Melon became overated.

I forgot what just "CHERRY BLOSSOM" smells like.. but WHITE Cherry Blossom.. has this sweet/romantic scent. My friend described it as it has a mature yet playful scent. Sweet Pea is nice too. Sorry, for not answering your question completely.. but WHITE Cherry Blossom is better. I prefer that over any scent at Bath %26amp; Body.

Has anyone noticed how the small things in life are actually a big part of your life? I always hear people saying this and I didn't actually realize it until recently. What small things make you happy? or What small things contribute to making your day a good day?

Here are some of mine:

-one good song will make my day

-laughing

-having the smallest conversation with someone like "Hello", "How are you doing?", "Me too", "Ok, bye", makes me happy

-Pressing the buttons on my calculator

-Eating green apples

-Different scents, like the smell of my homeroom, it smells like sharpened fresh pencils, or the smell of my house when you walk in, it smells like good food, or my favorite lotion (sweet pea)

-Ripped jeans

-Seeing my desktop wallpapers every time I turn my computer on, I just love it

-Saying "hey" to certain people when walking down the hallway

-When I clean my laptop (like when I clean the fingerprints on its screen and it looks all clean)

Why does a cat nip or bite you?

This recently has happened to me with Marshall, (it's been about three months since Marshall and Wylie stay 24/7 with me with limited freedom that's gated, and sleep with me), that when I pet him, he nips or bites me. Nothing serious. Just teeth marks. I'm just curious to why cats nip or bite you. (This summer, Sweet Pea bit my mom at the veins of her hand, and was infected, and had to get antibiotics. We don't know why that happened.)

Why does a cat nip or bite you?
Some cats, when they are very happy and feeling extremely affectionate towards their owner, will gently take a piece of human skin between their teeth and hold it for a few seconds. It's the feline equivalent of kissing.

Others, have a very low tolerance of being petted, and will lash out to tell you when they've had enough. Usually they will give you a few warning signs first, such as swishing their tail, flicking or flattening of their ears. Sometimes, as they grow older, their tolerance of being handled increases, but you still need to keep an eye out for signs that they're getting agitated.
Reply:Some cats do a thing called "passion biting" They get so excited and happy, that instead of licking or rubbing their face on you they bite. My female does it. She has learned what "No Bite" means now and does it less. It's not out of aggression, it's passion and affection to the extreme.

Reply:Cats nip and bite by instinct like they do in the wild when they catch there pray such as moles, birds, and rabbits, and mice they cant help it it's just to natrual to them. This has happend to my kitty before and i found out that he was just a super picky cat and just wanted me to pet him more softer and calm. Then he never did it again. Also if he does that when you just walk by him and he does it again then that just means he wants more attention. Maybe it may mean he wants to go out or his litter box is too dirty or maybe just wants a refill in his bowl for food or water. Cats show signs of what they want and your kitty just might be telling you something that he wants or maybe his instinct comes in and he see's a moving thing and he bites it, as he would do in the wild.

Reply:Why does any animal bite or nip?..............it is their only line of defense, they may feel threatened or don't like what is happening. Another reason is it is a show of affection, playfulness ect. Just make sure that the animal has all of their shots, your mother got infected because cats ,as a rule, have very dirty mouths. Any time the skin is broken with a cat bite, even if you clean it right away, usually always requires anti-biotics. Once I had a big cat for like 8 years, I was brushing him, and he was loving it. All of a sudden he turned around and bit the hell out of me, 12 hours later , I was in the hospital getting a strong dose of i.v. anti-biotics administered, for the infection. My husband then started calling that cat " Fang" from then on.

I own about 10 cats [i live on a farm] and most of them were raised outside. The cats get there Wild Side once they are outside. Most cats like to purr when they are happy. Sometimes when cats are very happy/excited, the cat starts to bite/nip. My house-raised cat, Thai always bites me when he first see's me. It just means they are excited to see you. If you do not like it when they bite you, just poke them on the nose or spray them with a spray bottle.

Kittens

My sister just got a kitten. Unfortunatly, she picked out the most playful one. The more playful, the more nippy. Her cat, Skooter, always bites you, it just means he is either teething or just doesnt know that it is bad for him to do that.

you might have some smell on your hand like food that causes them to bite you.

Or being playful...

Or if you have been gone more than usual lately or something has changed then they might be just acting out...

if it continues then i would use a squirt bottle when they bite you. Cats HATE that, so it might help them to stop.

I had a cat that you could pet for about 1 min and then he would just turn on you and would touch him for the rest of the day he was cranky though. He also got his claws into my mom wrist and it was really bad my mom was crying really bad because the nails went so far into her wrist. my one other cat would like to get pet but then for now reason he would bite me also but not hard just leave teeth marks but he wouldnt run away. Im pretty sure he liked doing it so I think to him it was just playing.
Reply:A lot of it depends on context. some cats dislike being picked up or petted. Or the cat may like being petted but suddenly smell another cat on you and react. Just prior to the bites, were you handling the cat? Cats do give warning signals to back off, but they are more subtle than you see in dogs. The first warning is a quick turn of the head to look at your hand. If that doesn't work the ears may go down and the pupils dilate. Then the tail starts flicking. If it makes big amplitude waves, the cat is really angry. Another cat would respond to the head turn and stop grooming. But humans often don't read it until it escalates into a paw swat or a bite.

Sometimes when I kiss my husband there's a certain smell that comes from his mouth and nose. Kind of like the smell when you drink sprite, or something with lime. That's my favorite scent.

But other times his breath is like burning trash and sulfur.

Cat talk: "mournful" whine to meow?

Happy New Year everyone? Remember I asked about a question about my brother's two cats and my cat in August 2006, and he wants to try it at my home. Well it happened this New Year's Weekend. What does it mean when a cat makes a "mournful" whine, when she sees another cat who meows in cat talk? My mom and I wants to know, since my cat's making the "mournful" whine and never done it before. Even with the door closed and a gate in front of her with bubble wrap, before she met one of my brother's cat, she made the same sound at night. Sweet Pea always wagged her tail. Does it mean she's lonely for some cat companionship or something else? She did hiss one, when my mom thought she squeezed her, when she's in her arms. BTW, the other cat is hiding still behind the drawer in my old bedroom with boxes. Any cat experts who knows what it means in cat talk would be deeply appreciated, and might be awarded 10 points.

Cat talk: "mournful" whine to meow?
The "mournful whine" is really a kind of questioning: " What's this? what's this? Freind or foe" Safe or dangerous? Edible?"

However, if the "whine" ends in a high note (meea-ooo), it is a cat call.

She is confused, she has no idea why there is another animal in her house. Give them time, they should make friends once their scent are combined.

I had to go back to work when my oldest was 4 months old. I worked opposite shift from my husband, so it didn't bother me much to leave her with him. The only thing was that she wanted the bottle more than my breat. That broke my heart!

It hurt worse when she was about 10 months. By then I was tired of never having time as a family and I felt I could leave her with my aunt. I changed shifts. I cried every morning! It didn't matter that she loved my aunt and I knew my aunt took good care of her. I still felt bad about leaving her with someone who was not her parent.

After a few months I got over it, and I felt a lot better about leaving her when she was 1 1/2 years and she could express herself more.
Reply:Are you a new mom?...congrats....you wouldn't be a mom if you didn't cry...you have grown attached to precious sweet pea, it's like being homesick, it'll level off....mean while, take plenty of pictures of your baby and line your workstation up...
Reply:Awww! It will get a little easier over time. You are doing what you have to do! It is always hard being away from the baby at first. But it will make you cherish even more the time that you spend together. Just remember that you are doing what is best to support your little angel.
Reply:I am not a mom, but I can tell you that it's very admirable that you are putting your feelings aside to provide for your child. Please do not feel guilty for working full-time to support your household...You are doing the right thing for your baby!

All mothers have to make hard choices about what is best for their child, and I know that the seperation anxiety has to hurt. When you are home, try to make the most of the time you spend with your baby. If you have vacation time saved up and no plans, consider taking one day out of the month off so you can get some much-needed Mom time.

I'm not sure what industry you are in, but many Fortune 500 companies are getting better about opening daycares within their office facility so that new moms like yourself can visit with their child during the day, and thus increase your morale and productivity. You may want to consider looking into what companies offer this, and make a move!

Well, through all of my tears I now see a more grown up 4 year old, going to preschool and making friends, just being completely bubbly, not inhibited, a real charmer =) I think it has helped her in the long run too...something to look forward to? =)
Reply:I went back to work when my daughter was 6 weeks old and it was the hardest thing I have ever done. Leaving her was awful. But as time goes on and you she that she/he is taken care of well them it get easier. She is 8 months old and I still don't like to leave her but you do what you have to do in order to support your baby and moms who work deserve a lot of respect!! It also make it so much better when you pick them up and see that smiley face like hi mommy it is so good to see you. It make your time away all worth that look. I know i see it in my daughter face each time I pick her up!! Good Luck to you it will get better!!
Reply:Yes, I am in the exact same situation.

I work full time (have to) and I hate the fact that someone else knows more about my child than I do, it seems.

Luckily, most of the important moments, such as first steps, have occurred at home. I'm very grateful for that.

I appreciate the fact that she's cared for by a great person, and that she gets to interact more with people than she would if I stayed home with her all the time. In my perfect world, I would just work part time so I could spend more time with her yet still get out of the house and around other people.

It's been very hard on me, I've cried a lot about it and still do occasionally. I just try to remember to make the best out of the time we do get to spend together, because like they say, it's the quality and not the quantity.

Just know that you're not alone, and I now know that I'm not either, in feeling this way. I'm very proud of the fact that I support the two of us on my own, and that she's very well taken care of! I hope someday my situation will change, just a little bit!
Reply:It sounds contrived, but it definitely does get easier each day. It helped that I had a daycare provider that I trusted 100% with my baby -- one less source of stress. Maybe you can visit with your baby during lunch time so that your time away is shortened.

They are very spindly like a vine, when I pulled a section up there was not much root. They are about 2 inches high, and I am a first year gardener, so any tips on this or anything else about thinning would be great. I also planted cosmos, delphinium, larkspur, sweet pea(mammoth), snapdragons, canterbury bells....and four o'clocks as a border around the south side of my garden and caladium borders my other sides......When should i stake my tall flowers? Have a Q about my climbing roses but I'll save that for another time. Thanx in advance.

when you thin, are you trying to replant the one you plucked out? if you are then yes you need to get all the root.. soak the area and gently pull out of soil, replant immediately...

Reply:To be honest, the guys probably don't even know the difference, unless they have a really girly sister who forces them to come in there. I'm going to say Japanese flower blossom smells the best, then sweet pea, then vanilla sugar. They all smell REALLY GOOD though!

2] most sophisticated - the V neck and the ruffles will give you curves; and the color should look great!

3] very cute - wear if you have great legs,or most friends wearing a short dress. NOT in pea green - you will look jaundiced! In order - try the purplish, the blue, or the fuschia

4] too young - will make you look 14. Again, not yellow.

To me Sweet Pea is a much softer scent than Lovespell. Lovespell smells like fruit punch to me and often gives me a headache when I'm around it. I don't really care for Sweet Pea either. I don't know about guys loving Lovespell but I've heard a lot of them rave about a couple scents from Bath and Body Works: Moonlight Path, Wild Honeysuckle and Cucumber Melon. Its also been proven that men like the smell of vanilla so maybe you could try a vanilla based perfume. But every guy is going to be different. Mine for example doesn't like perfume.
Reply:Love Spell is a great body spray. It doesn't last long, so many women combine the body spray with the lotion to keep smelling fresh all day.

Sweet Pea is a soft scent, but it will be noticed! Not only does it last all day, it also leaves your skin feeling baby soft.

In the end, it all comes down to you and your preferences. So smell both and pick your favorite!

Weaning a 8 month old, please help!?

My little sweet pea screamed like a crazy woman when offered a bottle when she was a wee thing whether it was breast milk or formula. Then my breastpump broke, and I gave up (regret that now). I'd prefer to keep soley breast feeding her till she is a year and can take milk in a cup, but my circumstances have changed, and I need to make money. I need to be able to leave her for longer stretches so that I can work. How can I wean her when she never learned how to suck from a bottle? Can I wean her to formula in a sippy cup? Or if I can find a pump, breastmilk in a sippy? She is very attached to me and will protest violently any change, any ideas on how I can do this?

Weaning a 8 month old, please help!?
sucking is natural for babies and if she can suck on your breast she will manage with a bottle trust me if shes thirsty she will drink some ppl say a sippy cup but i dont think shes old enough nor will she get enough that way maybe start that in a few months when shes older just get her a cutie bottle with cartoons or something pretty and she will go right to it good luck its gonna take a few weeks maybe sooner but she will get the hang of it and shes gonna be alright i hope the same for you......lol kids adjust well just stay strong and dont back out of this just do it and keep doing it she will catch on
Reply:It sounds like you've already had trouble getting her to take a bottle, so I think the best thing to do would be to express milk, and leave it for her in the fridge in a sippy cup, with her caregiver. At 8 months, there is really no sense in introducing a bottle, especially if she protests and you need to force it one her....it is just one more thing to wean her from.

Does she drink water out of a sippy cup now?

You may also find, that while you are at work, she will not drink anything, she will just refuse until you are home. Depending on how many hours you are at work, this is just fine. Many breastfed babies will not eat while in daycare, and wait patiently for mom. Then, your breastfeeding sessions upon reunion at the end of the day will be extra special.

You may also find that when you first return to work, she may want to nurse ALOT at night and on the weekends. If she is sleeping through the night, she may start to wake up again to nurse...this is all normal.

You can do it, mom, and congratulations on continuing to breastfeed upon returning to work. I had to go back to work full-time many years ago when my first son was 7 months. He was ok with breastmilk in a bottle, though, and my mom would drive him to me on my lunch break....is that an option for you?

I also suggest you borrow/buy/read the book "Nursing Mother, Working Mother" by Gale Pryor. It should be very useful for you.
Reply:she is plenty old enough to be weaned to a sippy cup, probably best to try with breast milk, she probably wont take formula. You may find it easier if you get someone else to offer it to her when you are not in the room. If she can see you she will just want the breast. It is really just a matter of trying regularly. All of my babies started on sippy cups at 7 months and did very well with them, My two sons never had a bottle at all.

Not true . Some exclusively breastfed babies will not take a bottle by 2 or 3 months of age. If your baby is refusing to take a bottle, do not try to force him; you and he may become very frustrated and there is just no need to go through all this. If the baby is at least 6 months of age when you start back at outside work, the baby quite simply does not need to take a bottle. If he is even 4 months, he does not need to take a bottle. He can be fed liquids or solids off a spoon just as any other 6 month old and by 6 months of age he can be taking enough so that he will not be hungry during the day. Furthermore, he can start learning to drink from a cup even by 5 or 6 months of age. The cup can be an open cup and does not need to have a spout. Start with water as your baby may spill a fair amount at first. If, however, he has not got the hang of the cup by the time you must leave him, do not worry, he can take fluids off a spoon, or the solid foods can be mixed with more liquid (expressed milk, juice, water). Obviously, if the baby is to be taking a fair amount of a variety of foods by 6 months of age, he may need to be started on solids by 5 months of age. However, some babies prefer to wait for the mother in order to drink something. This is fine; many babies sleep 12 hours at night without drinking or eating at all.

Myth: Babies need to drink milk when the mother is not at home.

Not true . Three or four good nursings during a 24 hour period plus a variety of solid foods gives the baby all he needs nutritionally, and thus he does not need any other type of milk when you are at your outside job. Of course, solid foods can be mixed with expressed milk or other milk, but this is not necessary..."

Reply:Your daughter can probably drink breastmilk from a sippy cup (or through a srtaw, like mine does). If she can't tackle these things yet, there is nothing wrong with giving the bottle another shot. Have someone (other than you, like daddy or grandma) give her the bottle. Sometimes babies refuse to take a bottle when they know that the feeder of that bottle is hiding the good stuff! :)

Your daughter may now be opposed to the taste of formula. if this is the case, you don't need a pump to express breastmilk. It is quite easy to manually express your milk, I have been doing so successfully for two months now (ever since my pump was accedentally packed up when we moved) and I prefer it to the breastpump, actually. Do a web search on how to manually express breastmilk or go to http://www.breastfeeding.com/helpme/help... to see how it can be done. It takes a little practice, but after a few times, you will be a pro!

As far as the change in your daughter's schedule is concerned, there are ways to help her through. Try making the experience of drinking out of a "big girl" cup fun. If she is developmentally unready, don't push it. None of us like things we can't do well (this is when the bottle is a good bet). If she seems eager to try the sippy cup/straw method, put a little water in the cup. She won't get a lot at first and you don't want to waste your milk! Once she gets the hang of it, switch to your milk in the cup.

Reply:My favorite is sweet pea, as you mentioned. I have the bath gel and lotion, and it smells just heavenly!

If you aren't convinced, take a whiff of cucumber melon and the mandarin one....I'm a big fan of those too.

it's a term of affection, but not necessarily serious. english guys can be more 'just friends' than many other cultures. but time will tell. if you hang around him long enough, you'll find out.

Anyway, I am from the the UK, and although I have never actually called anyone 'sweet pea' or 'luv' and especially not 'luvy', you can take it that they are being friendly. 'Sweet pea' is quite nice, and is meant in the nicest possible way, since sweet pea flowers are beautifully delicate with the most wonderful range of colours from whites and pastels to very strong and deep red, mauve, violet and purple.

The latter two are somewhat more general and can be used by East End barrow boys (to grab the possible youthful element) or more usually, older blokes talking to old dears! Ha ha. However, as I say, they are friendly greetings or terms to refer to a woman or girl and don't imply any offence. I think that if they happen to fancy you, and they are the correct age range, they will find better and hopefully more meaningful words.

Reply:If you have a timer set it up for 16 light/8 dark,otherwise try to keep track and give them some "night". I live in SE Indiana and am sprouting solanaceae seeds(tomato, chiles, datura) I am in zone 5almost6 and have found that sweet peas like it a little on the cool side so, depending on where you are, plant some direct to site and don't let your seedlings go to long under lights.
Reply:i turn my lights on before i go to work and before i go to bed: tomatoes peppers coleus petunias impatiants begonias but i just can't see starting a pea legume inside. the pea family is so quick to germinate and a vine that needs support almost as soon as tomorrow. no lights are only to substitute day hours then the plant needs to expire rest. god bless
