Can the flower, sweet pea be grown in upstate NY and come back annually?
While annual sweet peas do self sow, there actually is a perennial sweet pea which does come back every year. My has been in the garden for 5 years now and gets more robust every year. They like full sun, a trellis or fence to climb and reasonably moist soil. They can grow in Nova Scotia (where my plant came from out of a relative's garden) so you shouldn't have a problem with upstate NY.
Reply:Sweet peas will never "come back". They're an annual. If you're lucky, they'll reseed. They need a long growing season, support, and full sun.
Reply:yes it can be grown in upstate ny, they are an easy plant to grow. they prefer the sun, keep soil moist. you can buy a package of sweet pea seeds and start them inside 4-6 weeks before you can plant them out side. after the last heavy frost of the year (mid may- june)plant in ground.just keep moist and enjoy the sweet fragrance of them
