Could a young Pernell Whitaker have beaten Mayweather Jr?

Both are defensive fighters. Close comparison. I go with Sweet pea

Could a young Pernell Whitaker have beaten Mayweather Jr?
He not only could, he most certainly would. Pernell is a nightmare matchup for Floyd. More evasive, quicker, slicker, and smoother. Threw WAY more punches at a higher rate and was almost as accurate(especially with that jab) despite how many more he threw.

Floyd is a counter-puncher and would be pot-shotting against Whitaker. Against someone who throws more punches, you have to make your punches count, which Floyd did against Oscar, but against the best defensive fighter in history(Whitaker) Floyd would not be landing nearly as frequently. Pea throws more, lands more, makes Floyd miss more than he ever has, and wins a comfortable decision. Probably 9-3, at best 8-4.

Also, Sweet Pea beat Oscar, no question. He threw more punches, landed more, landed at a higher percentage, dropped him, and clowned him badly. Oscar was the aggressor, but boxing is based on effective aggressiveness, not coming forward and making yourself look foolish by missing all of your punches. And Sweet Pea made Oscar look downright foolish at times in that fight.
Reply:If the two fought at this relative stage in their careers where they are both welterweights (slightly heavier in Floyd's case), I believe Sweet Pete would have won in a close decision. Floyd's unwillingness to attack along with Pernells' fast hands and consistent effort would have frustrated and effected Floyd's ability to acutally win full rounds on the scorecards. Keep in mind Flyd at this weight throws one punch at a time which will not work against Pernel's defense. Straight left hand land on Floyd with that high left shoulder all night long. Pernell has the handspeed of a Zab Judah with much better defense and concentration.
Reply:of course he could, that's a no brainer. mayweather is a very good fighter, don't get me wrong, but sweetpea whitaker was one of the greatest lighter weight fighters in history. he would destroy maywaether just like he did to the great julio ceasar chavez, not to mention floyd mayweathers uncle roger
Reply:Alot of fighters throughout history could have beat Floyd.Floyd fought a bunch of second teir guys and the name guys that he did fight were all way past their prime and had been in many wars. They were just shells of their former selves.Thats not really Floyd's fault though,he can't help when he was born and what era of boxers he had available to face.I think if his career had started a decade before it did he would have been a really good fighter but he would not be undefeated. He would have had some wars with Julio Caesar Chavez in his prime.Whitaker in his prime.I think he would have had like a 38 and 5 record when he retired if he fought in that time.Plus he would have faced alot of the name guys he did face when they were still fresh and young as well.

I probably would have had more respect for Floyd with 5 losses in that time then 0 losses in this day and age.Again its not his fault he took the cards he was dealt and made the best of it.When he was about to fight De Lahoya he made the statement after this fight whats left for him and when i thought about it i realized he's right.I think he wishes he was born in a different generation to where he could have proven his worth. But he just took what he could get in this generation.
Reply:An old Pernell Whitaker beat a young Oscar DeLa Hoya regardless of what judges said. I was there, I watched it in person, and Pernell won 7 of 12 with a knockdown and got robbed. An old Oscar almost beat Floyd, a young Whitaker would have beaten Floyd, but the decision in the hands of the judges does not always reflect the truth. Great match up.
Reply:Hell yes!
Reply:that would be the most boringest fight of all time with both running from each other.oscar has a win against both these's wimps...
